Pottery Foundations - Lesson 3: Luminary Lantern

  • Mentors help members learn the skills featured in each week's Functional Pottery Foundations lesson.

    You'll demonstrate techniques, answer questions, provide encouragement, and assist beginners as they complete their projects.

    The lesson workbook provides the teaching outline, so no formal teaching experience is required—just a friendly attitude and a willingness to help.

    Mentor Notes:

    - Please arrive 15–20 minutes early to help set up.
    - Review the lesson workbook before class.
    - Stay a few minutes afterward to assist with cleanup if possible.

Members: No registration is required—just bring your own clay and join us! Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Functional Pottery Foundations is a free 6-week Mentor Monday series designed to help members build confidence with handbuilding while creating beautiful, functional pottery. Each week features one functional project and a new set of transferable pottery skills.

Bring your own clay each week, and if you have your own basic pottery tools, please bring them. A limited number of studio tool kits are available to share.

No registration is required—just come ready to learn! Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lesson 3 - Luminary Lantern 

Create a decorative luminary lantern while learning the fundamentals of cutwork and structural design. This project introduces planning cutout patterns, reinforcing delicate forms, and building sturdy slab structures that allow light to shine through safely.
